SaM originated in the choirs and jazz clubs of Sydney’s upper North Shore in 2009.

SaM was a trio made up of two vocalists and a keyboard player, specialising in arrangements of the great music of the last 100 years and originals written by Dennis Harris made into good music by Sonya Doyle and Marian Landers.  Arlen Rivera was our original drummer and she remains a spiritual member of the group.  John Gunn joined us in 2015 as our percussionist.

SaM - Sonya and Marian

SaM's History

In 2008, Dennis and a friend founded Club Musika (with much assistance from the Hornsby RSL Club).  For four years the club provided a venue for amateur musicians to perform.  The club was very popular and despite its closure in 2014 (we had all had enough of the fortnightly cycle of rehearsal, set, and pull-down routine), it is still well remembered by performers and fans.  It was at Club Musika that Sonya, Marian and Dennis first performed jazz together.  John was a some-time visitor and performer at the Club.

As SaM, we went after the big events, but the effort involved was far greater than we were able to handle on a regular basis, and at most of those functions, jazz is only suitable during a dinner.  So we decided to find smaller venues and essentially to busk at markets and fairs where we can tailor our music to the audience, and very little dance music is needed - we still do it especially for the kids, and we all like a bit of Rock 'n' Roll from time to time, but we are able to concentrate on the music we love at these events.

SaM has played for big functions at Jupiter’s Casino, Doltone House venues, Rydges Hotels, the Victorian National Gallery, Old Parliament House in Canberra and at many fairs, restaurants and clubs in Sydney.   We are also experienced church musicians and love to play at weddings and funerals.  We appeared at the Merimbula Jazz Festival in 2015 successfully and aim to work in more festivals in 2016.

Our current focus is concerts, something which came from preparing for a jazz festival appearance.  We now offer our clients in-home concerts:  small, intimate, two hour events to which you to invite your friends for a relaxing evening or afternoon of good music by SaM.

Our CDs have taken a lot of effort, time and learning but we are happy especially with "Remember" which we completed in early 2016.  We now have two CDs available - see the pages "Beginning" and "Remember".  Clips from these CDs are on the SaM Music pages on this site.  Our third CD, which will feature much more original music, is in planning.

Marian Landers (Alto) and Sonya Doyle (Soprano) have been singing together for several years.

Sonya’s experience in the arts, on stage and television, and in cabaret performance, has given her a special, sensitive and free approach to her music which is complemented by Dennis’ piano style.

Marian’s rich, head-turning alto voice and her natural harmonies, developed in choirs and singing groups, creates the signature sound of SaM.

Dennis Harris is an experienced pianist who has played in bands, and as a soloist, in pubs, bars and clubs all over the world.  In 2015, John Gunn joined the group as drummer.  John and Dennis go back many years, playing music around the ACT and NSW in the late 1970s.

We are available for your event and we never let price get in the way of a good gig!
